What is the fine for exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h

Exceeding the speed limit is punishable by a fine and, in certain cases, suspension of the driver’s license. Penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied for speeding.

Penalties applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the limit:

• 10 – 20 km/h: 2-3 fine points;
• 21 – 30 km/h: 4-5 fine points;
• 31 – 40 km/h: 6-8 fine points;
• 41 – 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points;
• over 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days;
• over 70 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.

The fine point is set, starting from January 1, 2024, at 165 lei.

So, the penalty for exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h is between 2 and 3 fine points. Which means a minimum fine of 330 lei. But, if the speed limit is exceeded by 21 km/h, the fine can reach 825 lei.

Practically, a single extra km/h can mean a penalty almost 500 lei higher.
