The radar devices, used by the Police, detect in just a few hundredths of a second how fast a vehicle is moving. And often a single kilometer can make the difference between a fine and a suspended license. Here is the fine for exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h, according to the Highway Code 2024.
Traffic fines increased in 2024, along with the change in the calculation method of the fine point. So, one more reason for drivers to drive carefully and obey the law.
But, in haste or carelessness, it can happen that we drive at a speed higher than the legal limit.
What happens if you exceed the speed limit by less than 10 km/h?
According to the law, it is forbidden to exceed the speed limit imposed on a certain road sector.
There is no article in the Highway Code that exempts drivers who drive up to 10 km/h over the imposed limit from liability.
However, the law does not impose sanctions in this situation. Therefore, even if the Traffic Police records with the radar device an exceeding of the maximum speed by 8-9 km/ha, they do not penalize the drivers. At most I can get a warning.
But if an accident occurs and it is proven that he exceeded the speed limit, even by a few km/h, that driver can be held guilty.
What is the fine for exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h
Exceeding the speed limit is punishable by a fine and, in certain cases, suspension of the driver’s license. Penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied for speeding.
Penalties applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the limit:
- 10 – 20 km/h: 2-3 fine points;
- 21 – 30 km/h: 4-5 fine points;
- 31 – 40 km/h: 6-8 fine points;
- 41 – 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points;
- over 50 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days;
- over 70 km/h: 9-20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.
The fine point is set, starting from January 1, 2024, at 165 lei.
So, the penalty for exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h is between 2 and 3 fine points. Which means a minimum fine of 330 lei. But, if the speed limit is exceeded by 21 km/h, the fine can reach 825 lei.
Practically, a single extra km/h can mean a penalty almost 500 lei higher.
