There are situations in which drivers can receive a speeding fine in the locality, even if they drive at 50 km/h. Here is the speed limit on bridges and what is the penalty for those who do not respect this obligation.
Speed limits differ according to the category of road for which they are imposed.
These are higher, in the case of highways and expressways, and lower for those driving in the locality.
What are the speed limits on Romanian roads?
The speed limits allowed in Romania are:
- 130 km/h on the highway;
- 120 km/h on express roads;
- 100 km/h on European roads;
- 90 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county);
- 50 km/h in the locality.
These maximum speeds are set by law, and exceeding them is punishable as a misdemeanor. In the case of drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h, their driving license is suspended.
How much is the fine for exceeding the legal speed limit?
Exceeding the legal speed is sanctioned with up to 20 fine points and, in certain cases, with the suspension of the driver’s license.
Depending on the speed with which he exceeded the maximum limit, the driver will be penalized with:
- 2-3 fine points, if he exceeded the maximum speed by 10-20 km/h;
- 4-5 fine points, if he exceeded the maximum speed by 21-30 km/h;
- 6-8 fine points, if he exceeded the maximum speed by 31-40 km/h;
- 9-20 fine points, if he exceeded the maximum speed by 41-50 km/h;
- 9-20 penalty points + driving license suspension for 90 daysif he exceeded the maximum speed by more than 51 km/h;
- 9-20 penalty points + driving license suspension for 120 daysif he exceeded the maximum speed by more than 70 km/h.
The value of one fine point is 165 lei, which means that the speeding penalty can reach 3,300 lei.
What is the speed limit on bridges?
A speed limit of 30 km/h is imposed on many bridges in the town. This is not, however, a general rule.
The road administrator sets the speed limit on certain road sectors, such as passages, bridges, the area of pedestrian crossings, schools, etc.
Thus, if a driver drives at 50 km/h, but passes over a bridge where the 30 km/h limit is imposed, he can receive a speeding fine.
Also, on some bridges the speed limit is 80 km/h. An example is the Cernavodă bridge, on the Soarelui highway. Drivers who do not slow down and drive over this bridge at over 130 km/h risk losing their license.
Therefore, more attention should be paid to road signs, especially mandatory ones. Because if a driver does not respect the maximum speed indicated by them, he risks being fined even when he drives at a speed that is, in principle, legal.
