The maximum speeds allowed in Romania differ depending on the type of road, the areas they cross, the size of the car and even the weather conditions. And drivers who do not respect these limits can be fined and even lose their license. Here is the speed limit outside the town and how many kilometers per hour you can drive on a National Road.
If a driver has a road to cover from Bucharest to Timișoara, he will pass through localities, he will travel on national, European roads, maybe even express, if he goes on the Pitesti-Craiova route. And of course, it also has some stretches of freeway.
So it will have different speed limits depending on each type of road. But, the limits will also differ depending on the vehicle you drive and the weather conditions.
What is the speed limit outside the town
In the locality, the speed limit is 50 km/h for all vehicles, regardless of license category or driver experience. However, outside the locality the limits vary.
Thus, the speed limit outside the town is:
- 90 km/h on national or county roads;
- 100 km/h on European roads;
- 120 km/h on express roads;
- 130 km/h on the highway.
Out-of-town speed limit for vehicles towing a trailer
The maximum speeds allowed outside the towns for the vehicle categories and subcategories are:
- 130 km/h on highways, 100 km/h on expressways or European national roads (E) and 90 km/h on other categories of roads, for vehicles in categories A and B;
- 110 km/h on highways, 90 km/h on expressways or European national roads (E) and 80 km/h on other categories of roads, for vehicles in categories C, D and subcategory D1;
- 90 km/h on highways, 80 km/h on expressways or European national roads (E) and 70 km/h for other categories of roads, for vehicles in subcategories A1, B1 and C1;
- 45 km/h, for tractors and mopeds.
„The maximum permitted speed outside the towns for vehicles towing trailers or semi-trailers is 10 km/h lower than the maximum permitted speed for the category to which the pulling vehicle belongs”, it is stipulated in Art. 50 (2) of the Highway Code.
The same law requires speed limits and for vehicles with excessive mass and/or dimensions or transporting dangerous products. They are not allowed to exceed 70 km/h outside the town.
„The maximum speed allowed outside the towns for vehicles whose drivers have less than a year of driving experience or for people who are doing practical training in order to obtain a driving license is 20 km/h lower than the maximum speed allowed for the category they belong to part of the vehicles driven“, the law also states.
The road manager may also impose different speed limits depending on the weather conditions. For example, on the A1 Bucharest-Pitesti highway, when it rains or the road is wet, the limit is reduced to 80 km/h.
So, returning to the example from the beginning, on a Bucharest-Timișoara road, the driver will have maximum speed limits that will vary between 30 km/h and 130 km/h.
