There is a common saying in our society, that is ‘the root of pride’. There are two powers hidden in every human being. One is angelic character or positive qualities and the other is demonic character or evil nature. One of those negative traits is pride.
There are six enemies of man’s psyche or character, known as Sharipu—lust, anger, greed, infatuation, alcohol, greed. This Sharripur Pancham is ‘mad’ i.e. arrogance, pride, glory, pride. And the sixth is ‘Matsarya’ ie envy, violence, greed.
Pride is the devil’s character. This pride and jealousy turned Iblish from the teacher of the angels into Satan. Allah Ta’ala says, ‘He refused (to honor the devil-honored Adam by prostrating) and became arrogant, so he became one of the disbelievers.’ (Surah-2 Baqarah, verse: 34)
Rasulullah (s.a.w.s.) said, three things are the cause of man’s destruction—inclination or self-worship, greed and self-conceit. He also said, ‘Pride is the most deadly harm.’ (Bayhaqi, Mishkat: 5122).
Self-glorification applies only to Allah Rabbul Alamin. He who quarrels with Allah with this quality, Allah destroys him; Destroyed his influence, glory, prestige and narrowed his life.
Allah Almighty says in Hadith Qudsi, ‘Pride is the opposite of my honor and honor is the garment of my glory; Whoever quarrels with me about either of these, I will punish him.’ (Abu Dawud: 4090)
‘Pride’ is a vile and despicable part of human nature. What is pride? In Hadith Sharif, Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (R.A.) narrated that Rasulullah (S.A.W.) said, ‘Pride is ignoring the truth and humiliating and belittling people.’ (Muslim: 91)
Abdullah Ibnul Mubarak was asked – what is pride? He said, Demeaning people. (Siaru Alamin Nubala, Volume: 8, Page: 407)
Why do people boast? Allah Ta’ala says, ‘Man certainly transgresses when he thinks himself free from want.’ (Sura-96 Alaq, verses: 6-7)
Glory in power and money is another aspect of pride. Which is described in the Qur’an Majid, ‘Then he (the arrogant person) said to his companion in the context of speech – I have more wealth than you and I am stronger in manpower.’ (Sura-18 Kahf, verse: 34)
Allah Rabbul Alamin says in the Qur’an about the proud, ‘Do not walk proudly on earth, surely you will never be able to split the surface of the earth and in height you will not be equal to the mountains.’ (Sura-17 Bani Israel, verse: 37).
‘Haughtily you do not despise men and do not walk proudly on earth. Indeed, Allah does not like the proud and arrogant. Be moderate in your step and lower your voice, surely the voice of a donkey is most unpleasant.’ (Surah-31 Luqman, verses: 18-19).
The root source of all sin is three, one. It was pride that brought down Iblis. Two. Greed, which drove Adam (a.s.) from Paradise. Three. Jealousy, which made one child of Adam (pbuh) retaliate against another.
A person who can survive the evils of the three things, he can survive all the evils. The root of kufr is ‘pride’, the root of sin is ‘greed’, the root of rebellion and transgression is ‘violence’. (Ibn al-Qayyim, Alfawayid: 58 pages).
Rasul Akram (PBUH) said about the fate of the arrogant, ‘The arrogant will rise on the Day of Resurrection in the form of human beings in miniature like ants. Shame will surround them everywhere. Then they will be dragged to a prison in Hell called Bullas. Where the blazing fire will cover them. There they will drink from the river called ‘Tinatul Khabal’, full of molten pus-blood of the burnt bodies of the hell-bound.’ (Tirmidhi: 1862, 2492; Mishkat: 3643, 5112).
The beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, ‘He who has an iota of pride in his heart will not enter Paradise.’ (Muslim: 91).
The result of pride in the world is humiliation. As much pride is created in his heart, his knowledge will decrease. If pride takes hold in one’s heart, then his eye of knowledge becomes blind, his understanding is lost; He thinks himself better than others. His face, behavior, movement and actions reeked of arrogance. (Bukhari, Muslim, Mishkat: 4029).
Rasulullah (SAW) said, ‘Shall I not inform you about the people of Hell? They are quarrelsome, obstinate and arrogant.’ (Bukhari, Muslim, Mishkat: 5106). So we should renounce our pride and refrain from dishonoring and belittling others.
