Those who hold a Category B license can drive several types of motor vehicles, including small capacity motorcycles. But, what kind of van are you entitled to drive, with this category of license, and in which situations is an additional exam required.
In Romania, there are four main license categories and three other special categories, to which several sub-categories are added.
In general, permits are granted for driving motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses, trams, trolleybuses and tractors.
License categories accepted in Romania
The categories of vehicles for which the driver’s license is issued, provided for in art. 20 para. (2) of Road Codeare defined as follows:
- Category A – motorcycles;
- Category B – cars;
- Category C – trucks;
- Category D – buses;
- Category Tr – tractor;
- TV category – tram;
- Category Tb – trolleybus.
An additional category is added to these, intended for those who want to tow a trailer.
Drivers in categories B, C and D must hold a Category E license if they attach a trailer or caravan heavier than 750 kg to the vehicle or if the combination exceeds 4,250 kg.
What kind of van can you drive with a Category B licence?
Category B license holders have the right to drive several types of vehicles on public roads.
These include automatic transmission motorcycles under 125 cubic centimeters, cargo vans and certain categories of agricultural machinery.
The condition is that these vehicles do not weigh more than 3.5 tons. At the same time, the vehicle should not have more than 8 seats for passengers.
So Category B license holders can drive a goods van, as long as the weight of the vehicle and goods does not exceed 3,500 kilograms. I can even drive a minibus if it meets the weight limit and has no more than 9 seats in total.
Jail, for those who drive a vehicle without a license
The Penal Code provides for a prison sentence of up to 3 years for those who do not possess the appropriate driver’s license.
„Driving on public roads a vehicle for which the law requires the possession of a driver’s license by a person whose driver’s license is inappropriate for the category or subcategory to which the respective vehicle belongs or whose license has been withdrawn or canceled or whose exercise of the right to to drive has been suspended or who does not have the right to drive motor vehicles in Romania, is punished with imprisonment from 6 months to 3 years or with a fine“, states the Criminal Code.
So, you risk going to jail if you have a Category B license and are caught behind the wheel of a van weighing more than 3.5 tons.
