What penalty do you get, in 2025, if you run a red light? In what situations can you legally do this?

If you run a red light, you risk, first of all, causing a traffic accident with particularly serious consequences. But at the same time, you risk losing your license and getting a significant fine. However, there are some situations where it is legal to run a red light.

Traffic fines have increased significantly at the beginning of 2025. Thus, drivers who violate traffic laws risk receiving sanctions of even more than 4,000 lei.

Here, for example, how the violation of the traffic light color is punished and in which situations it is legal to run on red.

What penalty do you get, in 2025, if you run a red light?

By law, when the traffic light is red, you do not have the right of way.

At the red light, the vehicle must be stopped before the stop sign or, as the case may be, for the crossing of pedestrians, and in its absence, next to the traffic light. If the traffic light is installed above or on the other side of the intersection, in the absence of the marking for stopping or for pedestrians to cross, the vehicle must stop before the edge of the carriageway of the road to be crossed“, establishes Art. 83, para. (2), from the traffic law.

Drivers who run red lights endanger their own lives as well as those of other road users.

The penalty for running a red light is 4 or 5 fine points and license suspension for 30 days.

Currently, the fine point is 5% of the value of the gross minimum wage per country. Which means that the fine for those who cross the red light is between 810 lei and 1,012.5 lei.

In what situations is it legal to run a red light?

The situations in which drivers can run a red light are those in which:

  • the traffic light is not addressed to them;
  • they have flashing green on the right;
  • the traffic light is not on a public road;
  • traffic is directed by a police officer who allows passage.

So you can’t run a red light if you have an emergency. And it’s not legal to do so even if you want to make way for an ambulance, fire department or police on duty.
