The answers reflected various positions, and the exchanges of remarks emphasized the tensions and differences of vision.
Mircea Geoana: the debate must take place in Parliament
Mircea Geoană highlighted the importance of a parliamentary debate. “There are draft laws in the Romanian Parliament that have been submitted for many years, as far as I know. And it’s time for the future National Parliament, after the December 1 elections, to bring these laws into debate and decide. It’s an important topic in society, it’s controversial, it’s not an easy topic.” Geoana reiterated that the discussion must be democratic and involve all interested parties.
Kelemen Hunor: supports civil partnership, but with limitations
Kelemen Hunor declared that “the civil partnership solves the other aspects and must be adopted”, but he emphasized that it must be clarified what it entails. “What does civil partnership mean, what does it represent? Because here you can go to a certain point where you have to stop. For example, adoption.” He insisted on the fact that marriage remains between a man and a woman.
Elena Lasconi: a clear support for civil partnership
Elena Lasconi firmly supported the legalization of civil partnerships, criticizing politicians who avoid the subject. “Politicians must respect people. The role of politicians is not to go into anyone’s bedroom.” Regarding the adoption, she said: “The interest of the child is above all else. At the moment, an individual who we don’t know what he does in the bedroom can adopt a child.”
George Simion: civil partnership, a “false theme”
George Simion qualified the subject as “a false theme” and insisted on preserving the traditional marriage. “Marriage is between a man and a woman. I think that legal solutions can be found without inventing a surrogate form of substitute for marriage, which is the basis of society.” Simion categorically rejected the idea of adoption by homosexual couples.
Cristian Diaconescu: the legislation must be clear
Cristian Diaconescu emphasized that the topic of civil partnership requires well-defined legislation. “We have to consider all of these components and really address the subject as bluntly and as directly as possible.” About adoption, he said that “you need a law” that establishes the criteria and conditions.
A tense moment took place between Elena Lasconi and Kelemen Hunor, when she said: “It is essential to respect minorities. Because the quality of a democracy depends on this.” Kelemen replied: “Don’t confuse ethnic minorities with sexual minorities.” Lasconi replied: “They are still minorities. Please respect people for their private lives.”
