Adriano, on the problems with alcohol: “Only I know how much I suffered”

Only I know how much I suffered. My father’s death left a huge hole. I felt alone and isolated when he died. I was sad and depressed, I was in Italy and from then on I started drinking. I couldn’t stop drinking and in the end I had to leave Inter. I didn’t even know how to hide, I arrived drunk in the morning at training. I always showed up, even if I was completely drunk and the medical staff had to take me to the infirmary to sleep. Inter was telling the press that I only have muscle problems. Later I realized that the major problem was the people around me, friends who did nothing but take me to parties with women and alcohol without thinking about the consequences. Then, returning to Brazil, I lost millions, but I gained happiness,” said Adriano, in an earlier interview with Brazil’s R7 publication.

Adriano retired from European football for good in March 2011 when he parted ways with AS Roma to sign for Corinthians.
