WhatsApp adds backgrounds and filters to video calls

Although it is true that Meta has already spent a long season in which WhatsApp adds new functions and improves existing ones constantlythere are two sensations that I cannot shake when I meet them. The first is the surprise that comes to me, positively, that after many years in which there were hardly any movements in this sense in the queen app of instant messaging, today its pace of evolution is truly remarkable. The second is that, even so, it still has some catching up to do to fully catch up and even overtake its main competitors. This is evident when we see, as is the case, the debut of a function that is already common in other similar services. Now, that phrase is in common use that says that it is never too late if the happiness is good, and it seems to be the case.

The news is that Meta ends to announce what WhatsApp adds a new functionality that allows users to personalize their video calls with filters and backgroundsimproving the visual experience and interaction during conversations. This new feature includes ten filters and ten different backgrounds. Among the available backgrounds are options such as “Living room” and “Cafe”, while the “Warm” and “Cool” filters modify the tone of the image. In addition, the new “Touch up” and “Low Light” functions help improve appearance and adjust lighting in adverse conditions.

This is the complete list of funds and filters:

Although until 2020, video calls (more commonly called videoconferences) were mainly limited to the professional environment, the pandemic and the confinements derived from it pushed a huge number of private users to start using this type of servicessince in many cases they were the most direct and complete means of communication with their loved ones. How many stories did we hear, at that time, of grandparents who could see their grandchildren thanks to WhatsApp, Zoom, Meet and similar services?

In some aspects, such as calls with multiple members, WhatsApp was able to evolve quickly, but in other aspects, such as personalization, has not yet reached the level offered by specific platforms for this type of communications. This is understandable, of course, but if you want to attract more users (many of whom still use professional services for video calls despite also being WhatsApp users), you must replicate their most used functions. And, without a doubt, in that sense this novelty is a success.
