I like WhatsApp audios. It is not ironic, just before writing this news I received a couple of them from my girlfriend, and this leads me to say that I have become a much more active user of them than I was until I met her. The fact is that, if until the beginning of summer (when we knew each other) my opinion was based mainly on the memes that circulate on social networks about endless voice messages, today I find them to be a very practical tool, and that I also use daily.
Now, it is true that, on certain occasions, audio messages can be a bit “awkward”. I am thinking, mainly, in circumstances in which you cannot listen to them with the privacy that you would like (for example in a public space and without headphones) or when you cannot dedicate several minutes, exclusively, to listening to them, and you prefer to set the pace yourself. reading little by little, instead of having to pause and then reactivate playback every little bit.
The good news, which we first heard about a few months ago, is that Meta had begun testing an automatic transcription system of WhatsApp audios. Well, today we can read that, finally, that function has started to reach Android users. Of course, in this permanent confrontation that some technologies seem to have with the European Union’s protection policies for its citizens, this function will not be available for the common European space at the moment.
It may seem like I’m exaggerating but, in reality, it is one of those functions that, as soon as you know about its existence, you wonder how we have survived without it until now. Of course, in this regard We must remember that WhatsApp is one step behind other applications who already offer something similar. However, and as I always say in these cases, better late than never, and I am looking forward to Meta overcoming the obstacles that currently prevent it from offering this function to its European users.
Meanwhile, those who have access to this function will be able to enjoy the convenience of transforming audio into text and reading it at their own pace. And this improvement, although simple, It makes a big difference in everyday lifeespecially for those who use WhatsApp in contexts where silence is essential or they simply prefer to read instead of listen. In addition, the fact that the transcription is done directly on the device allows us to maintain peace of mind regarding privacy.
