WhatsApp gets voices that resemble celebrities

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to its chatbot that will let you choose AI voices based on the voices of public figures.

WhatsApp is getting an option to choose celebrity voices for the new smart assistant in the app. That WhatsApp is working on this extension of the voice chat mode was leaked via a beta version of the Android app, reports WABetaInfo. The new Meta AI voices are ‘modeled after public figures’.

With the familiar voices, the interactions with the chatbot can feel more personal and familiar. It is not yet known which celebrities are involved. However, screenshots show that there are initially four voices of well-known public figures. In addition, there is a choice of three British voices and two American voices.

You can select a voice with a certain pitch, or one of a person who inspires you. Meta will undoubtedly add more voices later, also in other languages, but Meta AI currently only speaks English.

Not yet in Europe

Meta AI is the new smart assistant in the apps of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. The AI functions are currently not available in Europe.

Parent company Meta decided earlier this year not to launch Meta AI in the EU yet, because privacy regulators did not allow it to use the data of European users to train AI models. According to Meta, this would lead to a ‘second-rate experience’, which is why the company did not launch in Europe. Meta is still talking to European authorities about its AI plans, with a view to possibly launching them in the EU later.

Meta AI has more functions than just a chatbot. For example, you can also generate images, and those images even appear while you are typing. The chatbot can also refer to search results from both Microsoft Bing and Google in answers.

Rel over AI-stem Scarlett Johansson

In May, there was an uproar after OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, launched a new AI voice called Sky. The virtual voice sounded a lot like actress Scarlett Johansson. OpenAI eventually pulled the voice from the advanced voice mode in ChatGPT-4o.

Earlier this week, Google began rolling out its Gemini Live voice chat feature to all free users on Android.
