WhatsApp is launching this new video calling feature

WhatsApp introduces new options for video calling. Users can choose from different filters and backgrounds during their conversations, as you have been able to do for some time with apps like Zoom.

WhatsApp’s update announced today brings ten filters and ten backgrounds to the app. These filters are: warm, cool, black and white, light leakage, dreamy, prism light, fisheye, vintage TV, frosted glass and duotone. You can choose from the backgrounds: haze, living room, office, stones, foodie, blend, beach, sunset, party and forest. Some backgrounds are photos, others are illustrations.

In addition to filters and backgrounds, there will also be ‘touch up’ and ‘low light’ options. These ensure that your surroundings look better on camera and that your image becomes clearer in dark spaces.

How does it work?

During a video call, a new icon will appear in the top right corner of the screen. With a tap on this you open the menu with all available options. The new features work for both one-on-one conversations and group video chats.

Zoom and Teams

WhatsApp wants to increase competition with popular video calling services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. These platforms were widely used for working from home during the corona pandemic and are still popular. By offering similar features, WhatsApp is likely hoping that people will choose their app over other services.

WhatsApp says that the new features will be available to all users on iOS and Android in ‘the coming weeks’.
