Whee is TikTok’s new Instagram copy

But it is questionable whether users will access Whee for this reason alone. Especially since they can find similar functions in various other apps. TikTok’s Instagram copy Notes, which was recently launched and explicitly focuses on image posts, also has to compete against established platforms that already offer a wide range of social media features.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has meanwhile tried to shake up the market with another social media app. Lemon8 is considered a mix of Instagram and Pinterest, but has so far been unable to gain a foothold outside of Asia, including in the USA. ByteDance apps must fear that they will soon no longer play any role there. If the US law, which provides for the sale or ban of TikTok, is not actually declared invalid or revoked, TikTok will no longer be available in the USA from 2025. ByteDance has categorically ruled out a sale. This means that CapCut, Lemon8 and Whee are also likely to have problems in the USA and will probably be banned. TikTok is currently taking legal action against the law.

Social media meets AI: Butterflies is the next innovative social network

Just as new as Whee is the social media app Butterflies. Aisha Malik, among others, reports for TechCrunchThe app was launched on June 18th and was created by Vu Tran, a former Snapchat developer. His idea is to link AI features and social media usage even more closely – although both Snapchat and Meta, TikTok and Co. have long had comprehensive AI functions, even AI avatars for ads.

In the now in Play Store and App Store AI personas and people are supposed to coexist in the available app. Users can create an AI persona called Butterfly. This can then be given a specific background and can act like a creator itself. This is because it can independently share posts and write messages with which other app members can interact.

In addition, users can find AI-generated content tailored to them in the feed. Butterflies wants to be more than a social network and promote new interaction patterns. For example, Butterflies features the CEO of a Costco (in an alternate universe) who wants to keep hot dog prices at $1.50, but also creators who present their art. Thanks to the AI personas, there are hardly any limits for users. But it is precisely this aspect that could also lead to problems in interaction; after all, in metaverse contexts, for example, there have already been many digital attacks in the direct interaction of users, not to mention communication on social media. In this context, the app will still have to develop security measures should any misuse of the features become apparent.

The app is currently free to use. However, monetization via a subscription model is possible in the future. What connects Butterflies and Instagram is the way in which people can find and interact with content. But Vu Tran’s app focuses more on the AI character. We can be excited to see whether Butterflies can develop into a trend app – and whether Whee will also gain popularity once it is more widely available.
