North Korean authorities, intent on cracking down on the use of Chinese mobile phones and money transfers, are strengthening surveillance on families of North Korean defectors. It is said that North Korean defector families in North Korea are on the radar of security agents just by buying a house and moving.
On the 15th, a North Korean defector source from Daily NK in Hamgyeong Province said, “A North Korean defector family who recently purchased a house in Hoeryeong City is being summoned to the Security Department for investigation.” He added, “The Security Department is continuing to question the North Korean defector family about where they got the money to purchase the house.”
According to sources, this North Korean defector family lived in an old house that was about to collapse, but found a new house last month and finished moving.
However, the security agent in charge of the place where they originally lived came to the new house they moved to and persistently asked, “Where did you get the money to buy the house?”, “Did you send the money from Korea?”, and “If so, please tell me the person who delivered the money.” It is said that he inquired.
In fact, they bought a house with money sent by their family who escaped from North Korea and settled in South Korea, but they asked, “What’s wrong with buying a house?”, “Why do you follow us to the house we moved into and mistreat people?”, “The person who brought us the money also “There is none, I bought it with the money I saved all my life,” he protested fiercely and sent it back.
However, even after that, the National Security Agency visited their house two more times and tried to appease and threaten them, saying, “Please tell me only the person who delivered the money.” However, as the North Korean defector’s family continued to be uncooperative, Security Commissioner Lee reportedly wrote a report stating that they had received illegal remittances from South Korea and handed it over to the city Security Department.
Regarding this, the source explained, “The security officer in charge tried to find the person who delivered the money to the North Korean defector’s family, extort the money, and catch the remittance broker.
Sources say that the city’s security department has not arrested this North Korean defector family, but is continuing to call them in and investigate how they bought the house.
It has been reported that the North Korean defector’s family is currently claiming that they have not received any money from South Korea, so it is unknown when the investigation will end.
When the National Security Agency called in a North Korean defector’s family for questioning based solely on their suspicions and without accurate physical evidence, residents who know this are unanimously saying, “This is an incident that shows how severe the surveillance and control over North Korean defector families is.”
A source said, “Even if you buy a house with your own money, the National Security Agency is questioning the source of the money and harassing you, so living in itself is literally a pain.” He added, “Surveillance of ordinary people is severe, but the surveillance of North Korean defector families is horrendous.”
However, since this North Korean defector family has already purchased a house, it appears that it will not be easy for the Security Department to punish them unless they reveal the source of the money.
The source said, “Although being investigated is noisy and annoying, it is very fortunate that the money sent from Korea was safely delivered to us and we were able to buy a house while avoiding the surveillance of the National Security Agency.” He added, “There are many houses where money is collected without being able to spend a single penny, but this house is a house. He said, “I’m lucky because I even bought it.”
