The United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2024 will be held in Azerbaijan. From November 11 to 22, a global dialogue on climate plans will be held at the stadium in Baku.
The previous COP28 lasted from November 30 to December 13, 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At the time, there were criticisms directed at the choice of location for the summit, considering that the dialogue was conducted in a country that is at the top of the list of the largest oil producers. The same criticisms are being made this year as well. The venue and the topics to be discussed are a mismatch for certain groups and organizations.
Although Azerbaijan has a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2050, as well as for green energy to reach 30 percent of the energy mix by 2030, the fact that the country has exceptional natural resources, especially in the oil field, cannot be ignored. and natural gas.
Oil is produced both onshore and offshore in the Caspian Sea. The largest oil field is located about 100 km east of Baku and includes a series of reservoirs located at depths between 2,000 and 3,500 meters below the seabed of the Caspian Sea.

In addition to oil, Azerbaijan also has significant reserves of natural gas, the extraction of which is expected to continue in the coming decades with certain increases.
Such significant reserves of fossil fuels present Azerbaijan with a challenge: how to harmonize economic development based on the exploitation of these resources with global efforts to protect the climate and transition to renewable energy sources.
However, the United Arab Emirates, last year’s host, plans to increase the production of fossil fuels to a greater extent, and the same is the case with the host for COP30, Brazil. Economic targets threaten to undermine confidence in climate negotiations.
The mismatch between certain energy policies and the climate goals of several host countries has raised questions about the effectiveness of global climate negotiations.
The international community, especially the countries most affected by climate change, expect the hosts to show by example how ambitious climate goals can be achieved, but the question remains whether this is entirely possible in these countries.
