Anyone who buys a high-end smartphone in the coming year can choose from two lightning-fast chips. But which one is the best? You can read it in our Snapdragon 8 Elite vs MediaTek Dimensity 9400 comparison.
A few years ago, high-end Android smartphones almost always ran on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chip. There was simply no alternative, although Samsung often equipped its Galaxy S devices in the Netherlands with its own Exynos processor. However, it always lost out to Qualcomm in terms of speed and battery consumption.
The situation has now changed. MediaTek, which once mainly produced chips for cheap telephones, is making strong progress. So sturdy that Oppo, for example, equips its Find X8 Pro with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This partly has to do with the fact that Qualcomm is asking more and more money for its chips.
What are the differences between these competitors? And which chip is the fastest? We’ll tell you in our Snapdragon 8 Elite vs MediaTek Dimensity 9400 comparison.
Snapdragon has more raw computing power
There are now a number of smartphones with these new chips, as a result of which so-called benchmarks have appeared. These show how well they perform, but a small comment is in order. Sometimes manufacturers choose to run smartphones just below their maximum. They do this, for example, to ensure that a device does not get too hot or use too much battery juice.
That said, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is clearly faster than the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 in terms of pure computing power (the CPU). Depending on the type of test, the difference is about 10 to 15 percent.
For example, if you find it important that apps open quickly and there is no delay when exporting videos, then the Snapdragon has an advantage.
We should not exaggerate that, because in 2024 you will hardly feel the difference. This may change in a few years, when apps place higher demands on the processor in your smartphone.
GPU shows a different picture
Okay, so we’re out? MediaTek is getting closer, but the Snapdragon is still the best choice? Not quite. In addition to a CPU, the chips also have a GPU on board, or a ‘video card’. This is especially important if you play a lot of games on your smartphone.
The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 does come out on top there. It performs about 7 to 8 percent better than the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is included in the Xiaomi 15 Pro. That can ensure better frame rates in heavy 3D games. Here too the difference is of course small, but the fact that MediaTek takes home the win is striking to say the least.
Additionally, the Dimensity 9400 appears to produce less heat while gaming, allowing it to run at high levels for longer periods of time. This often also indicates lower energy consumption, but this needs to be tested more extensively.
Conclusion: neck and neck
We can’t point to a clear winner in our Snapdragon 8 Elite vs MediaTek Dimensity 9400 comparison. One has a little more computing power, the other does better in games. The differences are minimal and barely noticeable at this point.
That may be a bit boring, but somehow also reassuring. Anyone who buys a new high-end smartphone in the coming year does not actually have to pay attention to the chip. With both the latest Snapdragon and the latest MediaTek you get a lightning fast device.
