Ghebreyesus made evaluations at the WHO’s weekly press conference. Reminding that an agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas on January 15 for a ceasefire and the release of prisoners, Ghebreyesus said, “We welcome this news with great relief, but we are also sorry that it came too late for those who died in the conflict.” he said.
Ghebreyesus stated that they are cautious because the agreement has not yet been approved and said, “Although the agreement will come into force on January 19, if both parties are committed to a ceasefire, this should start immediately. We call on the Israeli cabinet to approve the agreement and all parties to respect and implement the agreement.” he said.
Underlining that WHO is ready to meet the health needs of the people of Gaza now and after the agreement comes into force, Ghebreyesus noted that they are determined to support the reconstruction of Gaza’s health system.
Ghebreyesus emphasized that less than half of the hospitals in Gaza are functional and said, “As I have said since the conflict began, the best medicine is peace. Peace is in everyone’s interest.” he said.
It was reported that the Israeli security cabinet will meet on Friday to approve the agreement after the disputes regarding the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza are resolved.
