Who is CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity firm behind Microsoft’s global outage?

The American company CrowdStrike Provides Cybersecurity Services to Enterprises. Founded in 2011 in Austin, Texas, it has built a solid reputation investigating high-profile cyberattacks. A large part of its business is reporting on the state of threats. In 2014, it revealed North Korea’s involvement in the hacking of Sony Pictures. CrowdStrike also worked on the theft of data from the Democratic camp during the 2016 US presidential elections.

In 2013, it launched the CrowdStrike Falcon platform, which is a terminal and server protection tool. The latter provides Endpoint detection and response (EDR) services, a technology that aims to be more advanced than traditional antiviruses. The platform can detect attacks, help respond to them and block threats. All via a single control screen. The CrowdStrike Falcon platform can be used to protect Microsoft Azure workloads. Concretely, CrowdStrike explains that its platform allows “to secure all virtual machines, to discover and minimize risks and to reduce the surface exposed to attacks.”

Its main competitor is the American company SentinelOne founded in 2013.

23,000 customers worldwide

In March 2024, CrowdStrike reported record results for its fourth quarter with annual recurring revenue reaching $222 million. CrowdStrike has nearly 8,000 employees and claims more than 23,000 customers worldwide. These good results could be tarnished in the coming months following the major computer incident on July 19 resulting from an update for Windows clients.
