At the European level, the question of imposing customs duties on Chinese cars is being debated. So who is for and who is against, that’s what we’re going to see together.
As relations become strained between Beijing and Brusselstwo camps are tearing each other apart in Europe. Those who are in favor of the EU imposing customs duties on electric vehicles coming from the middle country. Then you also have the counter camp.
Those who are for!
As a reminder, on August 20, the European Union announced that it wanted to introduce customs duties on electric vehicles from China. Customs duties could reach up to 35.3%and this for five years. But why take such a decision? In fact, the EU accuses China of having distorted global competition by massively subsidizing local manufacturers or those who would come to invest in the country. A tax that would be added to a tax already present on the European market. That of 10% on car imports.
An observation and a solution that France shares. Indeed, France is favorable to this establishment customs duties.
The same with Italy which announced, through the intermediary by Antonio TajaniItalian Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the media CorEvening rierebe in favor of the establishment of customs duties. The latter announces: “We support the taxes proposed by the European Commission to protect the competitiveness of our businesses”.
The counter camp
Conversely, some are fiercely opposed to the introduction of these customs duties. This is the case of Germany. It is true that the country may have doubts about the introduction of these customs duties since China is one of its main trading partners. In the automobile industry alone, let’s take the case of German manufacturers such as Mercedes, Volkswagen et BMW. For the latter, China represents up to 36 % sales volumes. A “trade war” between China and the EU could be more than harmful for the country.
You also have the case of Spain. A time for, Madrid finally expressed its great reluctance towards the introduction of these customs duties. In fact, Spain is in the same situation as Germany.
For its part, China could in turn take measures against Europe which could directly hit the European economy. However, even if a huge number of countries announced tomorrow that they no longer agreed with these customs duties, reversing this decision would not send a good message.
This is in any case the opinion of a European diplomat that we could read in the newspaper The World. The latter indicates “If we gave in to Beijing, we would send a message to the whole world that the EU is open to all pressures. That would be disastrous.”.
