WHO IS ERIC ADAMS?
Adams was born on September 1, 1960, in Brownsville, Brooklyn. His mother, Dorothy Mae Adams-Streeter, was a housekeeper and cook who worked double shifts. His father, Leroy, was a butcher who was addicted to alcohol. His family moved to New York from Alabama in 1950. Adams grew up in a rat-infested apartment in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood. They moved here in 1968 after his family bought a house in the south of the city. He is the fourth of six siblings. As a young boy, he also worked as a window cleaner.
At the age of 14, he joined a gang called the 7-Crowns and became known as the “little tough guy”. He would keep track of the numbers and keep the money for local scammers. He ran errands for a part-time prostitute he met named Micki after she broke her foot. After his foot healed, Micki didn’t want him walking around her, which hurt Eric’s feelings. He then asked her to pay for the purchases and work he did on his behalf, but Micki refused. A few days later, Eric and his brother broke into Micki’s house and stole the television and her money. The duo was later arrested. They were beaten in the police lockup until a black police officer intervened. Eric was sent to juvenile hall and paroled a few days later.
Adams graduated from Bayside High School in 1978 with a good GPA. While working as a mechanic and postal clerk in the Brooklyn district attorney’s office; He earned a bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a master’s degree from Marist College.
His mother died of heart disease in 2020.
He had long considered running for mayor of New York. He announced his candidacy on November 17, 2020. He was the second-highest fundraiser among Democrats in the campaign. On July 6, he won the primary and became the Democratic nominee. He ran against Republican Curtis Sliwa in the presidential election and was elected as the 110th Mayor of New York on November 2, 2021, with 67% of the votes.

There was a significant increase in crime rates in the first months of his term. He announced that he would bring back the plainclothes police unit, which was disbanded after the murder of George Floyd.

Adams has never been married. However, he has a son named Jordan Coleman from his ex-girlfriend Chrisena Coleman. His son, Jordan, is a TV actor and film producer who graduated from American University.
He became vegan after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2016. He prefers a plant-based diet over traditional treatments for diabetes. In October 2020, he published his book “Healthy at Last: A Plant-Based Approach to Preventing and Reversing Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses.”
