Who is this character lurking in the shadows?

It’s over for The Acolyte, which bows out after eight episodes set in the High Republic era. While there were many fears among fans of George Lucas’ universe, the possibility of breaking the canon was raised after the events of episode 5, the latest addition to the Disney+ catalog has finally landed on its feet. It took advantage of its distant links to the Skywalker saga to surprise its audience, without multiplying the winks and easter eggs like its predecessors.

More Star Wars would be nothing without a bit of fan service, and the final scene brought back a major protagonist. His pointy ears and green skin—even seen from behind—leave little room for doubt: Yoda was already a prominent Jedi in the High Republic era. But another character, this time much more discreet in the main saga, made an appearance. This is the first time he appears on screen, after having been mentioned many times.

The Rule of Two was at the heart of the narrative process of Star Wars. Qimir wanted to find a sidekick to become a Jedi Master, and thus train a Force-sensitive being in the rudiments of the dark side. But the character played by Manny Jacinto was clearly not an isolated renegade, another Sith was following Osha’s shift in silence and in the shadows. A master accompanied Vernestra Rwoh’s former disciple. One scene also shows this enigmatic character, who can easily be linked to the main saga. His physiognomy is reminiscent of that of Dark Plagueis, at least as he is represented in the comics. But who is he?

Darth Plagueis is a Munn, an alien race that sports grayish skin, long thin fingers, and a flattened nose. It is in Revenge of the Sith that it is first mentioned when Palpatine tells his story to the man who would later become Darth Vader. Darth Sidious explains that Darth Plagueis was able to wield mid-chlorians to create life. and achieve immortality. He passed this knowledge on to his apprentice, who killed him in his sleep. What Palpatine doesn’t say is that he is that apprentice.

The Acolyte takes place more than a century before this conversation, one that is readily described as the most powerful Sith Lordhas not yet crossed paths with Palpatine. He lives like other Sith, hidden from the world and especially from the Jedi. Like The Mandalorian, The Acolyte seems to want to rehabilitate controversial elements of the trilogy of the 2000s, filling the gaps left by the main saga.

A season 2?

The Acolyte is not yet promised a second batch of episodes, but the producer recently hinted that the teams were already preparing to return to the writing room. The appearance of Darth Plagueis is thus not a simple wink, the scene lays the foundations of a new plot that would be interesting to see explored on the small screen. If they have disappeared from the eyes of the Jedi and the Republic, the Sith are still present and are preparing their return. The reunion of Osha and Qimir leaves the door open to the exploration of their land of asylum. We can also imagine that the discovery of the origins of the two sisters / entities could play a role in the learning of Darth Plagueis. See you probably in a few months for the announcement (or not) of a second batch of episodes.
