Annual Kim? The Black Market event began in 2019 with the artist and then Kim? program director Kaspars Grošev’s initiative – to support the existence of the institution and local artists. The name is borrowed from the post-Soviet reality of the 1990s with secret “black markets” throughout the Baltics. Kim? The impromptu art fair/fair stand held for the fifth year continues to activate Riga’s contemporary art market scene, trying to overcome the curse that the market has never been truly legal or financially viable.

Kim? continues the started tradition by democratizing art sales activities and promoting forms of support for artists and art institutions. Thanks to previously organized donation campaigns, funds have been found for the creation of an architectural vision, the development of a construction project with minimal components and its submission to the building authority, as well as the maintenance of the building, the cleaning of the surroundings and the first repairs. This is still only the beginning on the way to the complete renovation of 22 Hanzas Street – the next step is to develop the full construction project and start more and more extensive renovation works.
