Nicolás Maduro has won the presidential election in Venezuela, according to partial results published by the electoral council, the BBC writes.
The head of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, who is a close ally of Maduro, said that with 80% of the votes counted, President Maduro had 51.2% of the vote, compared to 44.2% for his main rival.
The Venezuelan opposition claimed there was widespread fraud in the vote count and vowed to challenge the result.
It united around candidate Edmundo González to oust Maduro after 11 years in power.
Opinion polls gave González a considerable lead over Maduro.
