Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring has a surprisingly high price tag, even outselling the Galaxy Watch. How come?
Galaxy Ring versus Galaxy Watch
Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring has been teased by the company since January. In the period after that, more and more details leaked out, except for the price. As a result, the presentation was still a surprise, because people were shocked by the price tag of 449 euros.
Especially when you compare this price with the new Galaxy Watch 7, which is available from 319 euros. The Galaxy Watch not only measures the same as the Galaxy Ring, but also offers numerous extra functions thanks to the screen. The Galaxy Ring is also more expensive than the third generation Oura Ring with comparable functions. How is that possible?
1. No subscription
The Oura Ring is often referred to as a similar ring that does it much cheaper. However, that is not entirely fair. A big difference with the Oura Ring, which is available from 329 euros, is that you can only use that wearable in combination with a subscription of 5.99 euros per month.
You pay a one-time fee for the Galaxy Ring. If you plan to use the ring for two years, you will be better off with a Galaxy Ring.
2. Smaller is more expensive
The size makes it seem like you get less for the higher price, but in practice a smaller device often costs more because it is more complex to make. You have to fit all the sensors and a battery in that tiny device, while it also has to be waterproof. It is not for nothing that smartwatches are still quite bulky, because it costs a lot of money to make them smaller.
3. Better health data
The Galaxy Ring doesn’t just have the advantage of being smaller than the Galaxy Watch. Because the Galaxy Watch sits closer and more securely on your skin, the ring should be able to measure your health data more accurately. A ring should be able to track sleep better in particular.
4. New product category for Samsung
Above all, the Galaxy Ring is a new product category for Samsung. This is the very first version and it makes sense that it is being launched quite expensively. There is a good chance that subsequent versions of the Galaxy Ring will be cheaper, because Samsung learns from the production and can make the devices for a lower price.
Since there is still little competition on the market, Samsung can afford to start with this relatively high price. Whether it will be as successful as the tech giant’s other Galaxy devices remains to be seen.
More new stuff from Samsung
Although the Galaxy Ring will not be coming to the Netherlands for the time being, the new Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 6 will be released on July 24. The new Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra will be released on July 19.
