Great heat is reflected in all spheres of our lives. And while we talk every day about protection against heat waves, high temperatures and dehydration, the question is also how heat damages cars.

The heat damages the interior of the car the most, says car mechanic Aleksandar Ivić, and all components are exposed to high temperatures when the car is closed and parked.

“What we can do to protect the car is to find shelter, say under a tree, somewhere where there is shade or to put some protection on the inside of the vehicle. The heat affects both the varnish and the paint, which has long-term consequences. Also on matte colors, the interior of the car fades…”, pointed out Ivić.

There are more interventions on cars in the winter period, although, according to our interlocutor, there is no big difference in the summer either.

“There are also many problems with cooling and the cooling system of the engine, which is exposed to high temperatures. Everything has to work perfectly so that the car cools down and the engine is not damaged,” he points out.

Also, the brakes are very exposed, because it is more difficult for the brake system to cool down at high temperatures. And as Ivić adds, air conditioners are also stressed at high temperatures, so air conditioners should be in perfect condition.

What is the possibility of the car catching fire at high temperatures

“The biggest cause of a car catching fire is a malfunction in the car’s electrical installations. As soon as the car is burdened with the operation of the air conditioner, the electrical installations suffer as well. If there is a leak of engine oil or fuel, this can also be the cause of the car starting,” says the car mechanic.

He also explained that the operation of the air conditioner affects fuel consumption. Everything, he says, depends on the size of the car and the cubic capacity.

“Fuel consumption can increase by about half a liter to a liter with the air conditioner on.”
