Why the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is Tim’s favorite smartphone of 2024

2024 was packed with launches of cool smartphones, but my favorite is the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. In this article I will explain why that is the case.

Tim’s favorite of 2024: Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

For the past two years I chose the Nothing Phone (1) and Phone (2) as my favorite smartphone of the year. The devices have a striking back and unique designs. Although most see that as an unnecessary one gimmickI like it. Such craziness makes using your smartphone fun again.

The first Fold in the Netherlands with all the trimmings

With the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google offers the most complete folding smartphone. It may not be the best in terms of battery, speed or cameras, but it performs more than well enough everywhere else. It runs on the Tensor G4 chip, just like the normal Pixel 9s. This is smooth for daily use, games and can handle AI well.

Also nice: the cameras take very nice photos. There is a 48 megapixel main camera, a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens to zoom in without loss of quality. The battery is not huge at 4650 mAh, but it lasts all day. That’s what it’s all about for me.

What the Pixel 9 Pro Fold excels most in are the beautiful AMOLED screens. The foldable screen has a size of 8 inches, which is perfect for multitasking, watching movies and gaming. There is a 6.3-inch display on the front, which is a nice size for normal use. This is not the case with all competitors.

Being a Google Pixel, the phone will be the first to get access to the latest Android versions. Google also keeps its design modest, which makes the software clear. And the best thing about a Pixel is the update policy. The 9 Pro Fold lasts until Android 21 and is digitally secured until 2031.

Google is making big strides from its first Pixel Fold

Google puts all that hardware in one of the thinnest housings. With a folded thickness of 10.2 millimeters, there are only a few thinner folding phones on the market, such as the Honor Magic V3. However, this device comes with its own disadvantages, such as busy software and shorter software support.

The foldable is far from perfect

What will be the biggest dealbreaker for many is the price of the Pixel. The smartphone cost 1899 euros new. It has now dropped slightly in price and you pay € 1,599.

That remains a lot of money for a smartphone that – apart from the fact that it can fold – mainly has disadvantages compared to its non-folding counterparts.

pixel 9 pro fold review

Perhaps the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is not yet recommended for most. Yet the smartphone shows what Google is capable of, not only in the field of software, but also with hardware. I hope that Google manages to make the housing even thinner for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, like on the Honor Magic V3 and uses silicon-carbon batteries. They offer a longer battery life in a compact housing.
