The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is my favorite of 2024
In 2023 and 2022 I chose a Google Pixel as my favorite smartphone of that year. And while I’ve been using the Pixel 9 for quite some time over the past few months, there’s a phone that’s been in my pocket for longer. That is the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, which was released in the Netherlands in April.
You may find it a striking choice, because the Edge 50 Pro is secretly quite the odd one out. The device is not really high-end and has quite a few drawbacks. Still, I have been using the smartphone with pleasure for a long time and this is why.
Charging very quickly
The best feature of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is without a doubt the charging speed. The smartphone pumps the battery full with no less than 125 watts, so charging takes only twenty minutes. This means that if you forget to charge, for example, you always have it available no time 100 percent charge
That is – as editor Mike also indicated in his article about the OnePlus 12 – an addictive luxury. Especially if you use another device for a while, you will immediately miss the fast charging. It is also useful that the Edge 50 Pro can charge wirelessly, although you don’t even need that function.
To crack a critical note: the battery life is good, but not great. At 4500 mAh, the battery is smaller than we are used to in 2024 and you will notice that. If you are an intensive smartphone user, you can empty the Pro within a day. However, with normal use you can easily make it to the end of the day without having to recharge.
Pretty all-round
In addition, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is quite a complete smartphone. The device is beautifully designed, feels thin due to the curved screen edges and has a back of vegan leather. This provides extra grip and it also looks quite striking.
The screen, which is 6.7 inches, is easy to look at and produces beautiful colors. The screen edges are curved and although this hardly adds anything in practice, it does not bother either. Fortunately, the bezels around the display are also nice and thin.
The software on the Edge 50 Pro is easy to use. Motorola introduced its new Hello UI software with the phone. It is not very different from the former MyUX, but everything looks a little clearer and more modern. Motorola stays close to the standard version of Android and that is always a good choice as far as I am concerned.
The Motorola smartphone will receive three new Android versions and four years of security patches. In our review I wrote that the update policy is not bad, but you can expect more for a phone costing 699 euros.
That is still the case, but since the Edge 50 Pro has now dropped considerably in price, we can live with the update policy. It’s nice that the first major update – Android 15 – is already available for the phone.
But not the fastest
The fact that the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is more of a mid-range smartphone than a high-end smartphone is mainly noticeable in the speed of the hardware. Don’t get me wrong: the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor is sufficient for daily use, but it is a step back if you are used to the most expensive phones.
The Moto is definitely not slow. Apps start quickly and in general the phone flies through the software. Only when you start taking photos do you notice that the Edge 50 Pro sometimes struggles. The camera app falters and image processing simply takes a little more time.
Fortunately, it is worth waiting a while for your photo, because the cameras do a great job. The Pro always produces a nice photo, and the device also holds its own in the dark. The only thing that stands out is that the colors of the wide-angle lens sometimes differ from the main camera. For the average smartphone photographer, this is probably not a problem.
Dropped considerably in price
All in all, there are still areas for improvement for the next Edge Pro phone. Nevertheless, the Edge 50 Pro is a complete smartphone that has plenty to offer. In our review we wrote: ‘The Edge 50 Pro is not cheap, but you should consider it if you are looking for a stylish smartphone with a number of useful features. Especially if it soon drops in price a bit.’

The latter is now the case. In fact, the phone is now more than 250 euros cheaper and you can get it for €437.99. That’s a great price for a more than excellent smartphone that also looks stylish.
