It’s December again and so we look back on the past year. Mike’s favorite smartphone of 2024 is the OnePlus 12. Are you curious why? Then read on!
The OnePlus 12 is my favorite of 2024
My first OnePlus smartphone was the original OnePlus Nord. A nice device that certainly had a lot to offer for its relatively low price. The Nord was released at a time when the brand’s high-end devices were in dire straits. According to early fans, OnePlus had lost its face. Of course, it didn’t help that they were becoming more and more expensive.
Fortunately, OnePlus has been getting back on its feet in recent years. The OnePlus 11 was already a good high-end device and the OnePlus 12 is even my favorite smartphone of 2024. I have been using it for months as a daily driver. This is not due to one specific function, but because it is such a well-balanced total package.
Fast charging is an addictive luxury
If I had to mention a favorite feature of the OnePlus 12, it would without a doubt be the charging speed. With 100 watts of power, the device is fully charged again within half an hour. That is a luxury that you get used to very quickly.
I also never charge it overnight, because that is simply not necessary. If I plug it in after waking up in the morning, the battery is always at 100 percent when I leave the house.
This is also due to the excellent battery life. The 5400 mAh battery lasts forever. I have never managed to empty the OnePlus 12 within a day. In fact, I often have almost half a tank left in the morning. Now I’m not a very serious addict, but even with heavy use the device won’t let you down easily.
Lightning fast
Another smartphone that I have used a lot this year is the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. That is also an excellent device, which also has (even) better build quality than the OnePlus 12 and is better resistant to water. However, the Pixel loses out in a number of other areas. It charges less quickly and also feels slightly slower in daily use.
The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, is lightning fast. So fast that I rarely think about speed. Apps always open immediately, I never see any glitches and editing photos and short videos also runs smoothly. The Pixel 9 Pro often needs just a second more time to think about it, and as a spoiled OnePlus user you will immediately notice that.
As always, OnePlus also opted for a good vibration motor and excellent speakers. The screen is also excellent, although I’m personally not a fan of the curved edges. Fortunately, the OnePlus 13 has an (almost) flat display.
Photos have nice colors
OnePlus has been working with Hasselblad for the cameras for years, which takes care of the color adjustment. This ensures that the OnePlus 12 distinguishes itself from other high-end smartphones with a slightly nostalgic look. We like it very much, although there is of course no accounting for taste.
The camera hardware of the device is not earth-shattering, but it is good enough. I really like that the 64 megapixel telephoto lens makes the image ‘only’ 3x closer. That’s a lot more convenient than the 5x zoom lens you find on the Pixel 9 Pro XL. In my experience, that often gets you too close. If necessary, you can zoom in up to 6x with the OnePlus and still have 16 megapixels left. This works great, especially during the day.
Price-quality ratio is right
Part of the success of the OnePlus 12 is also its price. At 949 euros it was certainly not cheap, but it was cheaper than many competitors in the premium segment. You can now order it for €739.
For that amount you get a device that scores at least well in every area and often even better. It is large and quite heavy at 220 grams, but fits well in the hand and has proven itself this year as a reliable companion.
Worst smartphone of 2024
The Pulse Pro costs little, but you only buy annoyance. The pale screen, the creaking casing, the extremely slow processor and the unusable cameras: I hope to never see this device again.
