Due to more expensive logistics from Asia according to a survey, imported e-bikes could become more expensive.
The electric bicycle market saw a decline in 2023 in France and Europe. This is partly due to inflation and therefore prices which have slowed down buyers, coupled with a drop in demand. If INSEE reassures with a drop in inflation in 2024 (1.3% compared to 4.9% in 2023), this dynamic continues and the factors are as numerous as they are variable. Among them, we find containers. Remember that many components, even entire electric bikes, come from Asia. And they are likely to be even more expensive in 2025.
Imports from China and Vietnam affected
This is not a single source but a Container xChange survey of 900 professionals in the sector in China which says this, reveals to us Bike Europe. At least, 82% of them believe that the price of containers will increase in January. This could have consequences for several months or even the entire year, whether for brands or resellers of electric bikes.
In China, container prices had fallen slightly in recent months, specifies Bike Europebut to a lesser extent at the end of 2024. “Uncertainty and increasing volatility will certainly keep the price of containers at a high level in the first quarter of 2025“, explains Christian Roeloffs, CEO of Container xChange.
“Values indicate a similar trend in Vietnam“, adds the leader, knowing that the country is one of the three largest exporters to Europe. The price of containers has increased significantly in 2024: 42% in Haiphong and 66% in Ho Chi Minh.
More bikes Made in Europe?
We can therefore hypothesize that the final price of electric bikes could increase slightly for the customer, in order to compensate for the potential increase in the price of containers.
Some brands could also review their supply or logistics, turning more towards Made in Europe or even Made in France.
