Why you can’t slouch and swear at politicians in the Peugeot e-5008

There are many similarities between the Peugeot E-5008 and the previously presented E-3008, but there are also striking differences. And they are not limited to two extra seats.

If you look straight into the 5008’s LED headlights, it looks like one Peugeot 3008. Even if you secretly look at his back with a high waistline, you will see many similarities. The same thing happens if you strip both cars; then you see the same platform (STLA Medium) and the same batteries and motors.

Peugeot 5008 is a real SUV

But in profile, the 3008 is more of a liftback and the 5008 is a real SUV, just like its predecessor. So it is not there ‘for beauty’, but remains practical. For many interested parties, the extra back seat is the most important added value. And that immediately makes it virtually unique, because there are not many electric cars with seven seats. Of course there is the immense Let’s EV9but it is much larger and more expensive. In the 5008 segment the Mercedes EQB the only other.

Range Peugeot E-5008

We drive the basic model, the front-wheel drive E-5008 with 210 hp and a range of 502 kilometers. Only later will the more powerful versions come, such as the 231 hp Long Range version with the enormous range of 668 kilometers. We also have to wait a little longer for the Dual Motor with 322 hp and 4WD. Just like the 3008, the 5008 is also available with petrol engines. This concerns a 136 hp mild hybrid and a PHEV with 195 hp.

Peugeot E-5008 is packed with conveniences

Let’s take a closer look at the 3008 presented earlier this year. The 5008 is 16.2 centimeters longer and that makes a big difference. Inside you stumble over the features that the 3008 does not have. The rear seat can be slid and the bench backrest can be folded in the ratio 40:20:40. A total of 1815 liters fit in the luggage compartment.

It is useful that the roller cover can be stored in a compartment under the loading floor. Passengers sitting at the very back are assisted in their boarding struggles by what used to be called a walk-in system for three-door cars. The sofa slides far forward and is tiltable. Peugeot prefers to talk about Easy Access.

Don’t slouch and curse

Actually, the Peugeot, with its length of 4.79 meters, is not that big at all. For example, the Kia EV9 is 5.01 meters long. So don’t expect to sit all the way in the back with a bag of chips and swear at footballers and politicians. Although it must be said that the beautiful, leather-covered bench of our test car invites you to do so. The legroom could definitely be worse, especially if the people in the second row are willing to move the back seat forward a bit.

With bowed head

The main room is a different story. If you are taller than 1.70 metres, you should sit with your back arched and your head tucked in, as if you were doing a back extension at the gym. Seven people can take little more than a toothbrush, a pair of clean socks and an extra can of deodorant. With all seats in position, you have to make do with 259 liters of luggage space.

Cool aluminum and homely gray

It is better to sit on the regular, spacious back seat, and even better in the front. We already marveled at the i-Cockpit in the E-3008 and we are doing so again. Peugeot boasts French luxury, and to emphasize this, the manufacturer placed a large floating screen (21 inches) above the small steering wheel, which is slightly curved. Aluminum was used for a number of trim parts and Peugeot has applied gray fabrics for some homeliness. A tasteful whole. In the dark, some elements glow azure blue.

Floating screen in E-5008 GT

There are shortcut keys on the dashboard under the ventilation grilles that you can compare with apps. You can decide for yourself which functions you want under the shortcut key, such as climate control or navigation. Peugeot calls them i-Toggles. Sounds like a new snack, but is a welcome trick to guide you over the steep cliffs of the menu structures. It’s a pity that both the floating screen and the shortcut keys are exclusive to the expensive GT version. The i-Toggle-less basic version Allure has two 10-inch panels.

Electric Peugeot 5008 is not lightning fast

What we noticed during the very first meters with the 3008 is now happening again. The 5008 does not pull the lightning-fast sprints that are so typical of EVs. If you are enthusiastic with your right foot, all the power will not be released in one fell swoop. This is much more gradual, as if the 5008 with plug is still in the cupboard and would rather be a petrol engine. That slow start can also be seen in the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h; 9.8 seconds is not a time to brag about for an EV.

Surprising suspension comfort

But if we are honest, a blood-curdling sprint does not match the comfortable character of the 5008, which does not tire its passengers with annoying wind or rolling noises. An even more pleasant surprise is the suspension comfort. In this respect it surprisingly rivals the more compact and overly tuned 3008. Small and large bumps are processed much more smoothly, and the longer wheelbase also offers advantages in this area.

Price Peugeot E-5008

We expected the starting price of the Peugeot E-5008 to be well above 50,000 euros. But that’s not too bad. Peugeot asks 48,415 euros for the E-5008 Allure with 73 kWh. The GT is listed for 52,915 euros in the price list. The Peugeot E-5008 Allure with the 98 kWh battery and a range of 668 km is exactly the same price.

Peugeot 5008 Hybrid 136 price

The price of the Hybrid 136, equipped with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder and a small electric motor. It costs 45,720 euros in Allure trim. The 5008 with the highest starting price is the 195 hp Plug-in Hybrid, which takes at least 49,220 euros from the savings account.

8 year Peugeot factory warranty

Those who object to the high prices of the Peugeot 5008 may be persuaded by an 8-year or 160,000 kilometer warranty. Please note: this only applies to the electric versions.

We end with some unavoidable loading facts. The 5008 is a mid-range car, with 11 kW charging capacity at the regular charging station and 160 kW at the fast charger. If you charge it at home, you have to wait 4 hours and 30 minutes until the battery is 80 percent full. At FastNed it takes half an hour. The downside is that a heat pump is not standard.

Peugeot 5008 vs. 3008

Compared to the 3008, the 5008 offers two advantages: it is more practical and more comfortable. The fact that the 5008 is less sporty will be of no concern to buyers of seven-seaters. They mainly want practical virtues and the 5008 offers plenty of that. You pay a lot for that. Too big perhaps, until you see the dazzling i-Cockpit and are seduced by its French charm.
