Formula 1 and Formula E were both on the calendar last Sunday. While in Hungary the cars kept driving lap after lap in almost the same order, London was in an uproar due to the intense Formula E finale.
Last Sunday was the apotheosis of the Formula E season. Mitch Evans, Pascal Wehrlein and Nick Cassidy could all still become champions after Wehrlein won the first race of the doubleheader on Saturday. In their third generation of electric race cars, they tore around the circuit in London, which is partly indoors and partly outdoors. The tight circuit makes for a lot of pushing and shoving by the competitors, which also makes for an unpredictable outcome.
After sixteen rounds of racing, Pascal Wehrlein finally managed to win the title in the Porsche after six years in Formula E, six points ahead of Mitch Evans. The two New Zealanders from Jaguar (Evans and Cassidy) just missed out on the main prize, but did win the team prize for their employer. Jean-Éric Vergne is the only driver to have won the championship twice. Besides him, another driver won every year.
Ever more exciting, always dynamic
In the early days of Formula E in 2014, there was an awkward transition between two cars halfway through the race. But this third generation of racing EVs is very impressive. They can go from 0 to 100 in 2 seconds and they can effortlessly finish the race. It doesn’t look like that on the screen because they have to take a virtual battery into account. If it is at 0 percent, they are not allowed to continue. But insiders told us that there is at least 20 kWh of battery charge left. Next year, the Gen3 Evo will be raced, which goes from 0 to 100 in 1.82 seconds and should have 5 to 10 percent more grip. Because of new tires from sponsor Hankook, but also because the engine in the front will now not only be used to charge when braking, but also to provide four-wheel drive during acceleration.
Reason enough to watch Formula E next year. The obstacle is the limited possibility to follow it live. In the Netherlands, this is only possible via an extra sports package for television with Eurosport 2 or Ziggo Sport Go.
