Why You Shouldn’t Kill Spiders in Your Home

You hate them, or at least you’re afraid of them? That’s no reason to kill these discreet inhabitants of your house.

Who, honestly, can claim to like spiders? Except when it’s a superhero in tights played by Tom Holland, it must be said that they are generally not very popular. However, beyond our often irrational fears, they also have their uses.

Spiders in the corners

Indeed, like any other insect living discreetly around us, spiders also have their uses within our domestic ecosystem and more generally within ordinary biodiversity. And this is the case even if we do not want to see them, nor their webs, which are as sticky as they are invasive. Moral: even if we frankly hate spiders, we should still not kill them.

Besides, if spiders live in your home, and it is in fact a certainty, it is very likely that you do not even know it, as they generally remain in their corner, without ever seeking to harm you in any way. As for the other insects that they will devour, it is basically more of a service to your interior than to do so.

Comfort, warmth and food

In itself, given our size compared to theirs, it is quite unlikely that they would be interested in us, and just as unlikely that they could harm you in any way. What is more, if they did bite you, it is not the weak power of their venom that is likely to bother you. A venom that will however be enough to get rid of the flies and mosquitoes that annoy you. Insects that are potentially carriers of disease.

Basically, what attracts spiders to your home? First, comfort: they find shelter, warmth and food there. Enough to make you want to stay, right? You will generally see more of them in the fall, because that corresponds to their breeding season, when the males will come out more from their nooks.

Natural repellents

If you don’t kill the spiders, you can still try to keep them away. Beyond chemical insecticides, there is no shortage of natural repellents. For example, you can simply spray white vinegar with a spray bottle. Spray towards nests, around windows, doors and in corners of rooms.

You can also use orange or lemon peels or chestnuts as a natural insecticide. Cloves, cedar balls or chestnuts cut in half will work just as well to keep spiders away. Finally, the strong smell of essential oils can be enough to bother them.
