Wife killed for dowry demand in Chandpur, husband sentenced to death

Chandpur’s Hajiganj for killing his wife Mariam Begum (25) for demanding dowry. Mohin Uddin (35) was sentenced to death by the court.

Sentenced to death. Mohin Uddin is the son of Liaqat Ali of Mohan Gazi village of East Kazirgaon upazila. Meanwhile, the deceased housewife Maryam Begum is the daughter of Haji Niamat Ullah Miji of Mollardor Miji village of Hajiganj upazila.

According to the details of the case, Maryam and Mohin Uddin got married according to Islamic Shariah with family consent. They have two children. At the time of the marriage, Maryam’s father gave a gold necklace and one lakh taka in cash. After that, Mohin Uddin will start a new business and ask for money from his father-in-law as dowry through Maryam. Several family meetings were held regarding these. On the day of the incident, on November 2, 2017, sometime between 8:00 PM and 11:30 PM, Mohin Uddin killed Maryam by pressing a pillow and suffocating her during an argument.

Maryam’s father Niamat Ullah Mizi said, the day after the incident, on the morning of November 3, we received the news of her daughter’s death. I went there and found my daughter covered with a thin sheet in a two-story room of her father-in-law’s house. Later the police came and made a body and sent it to Chandpur morgue for post-mortem.

In this incident, Maryam’s father Niamat Ullah Miji filed a case against 5 people including son-in-law Mohin Uddin in Hajiganj police station. After the court accepted the case, the investigation was handed over to the PBI. The then police inspector of PBI Chandpur Md. Shah Alam. After the investigation, he filed a surgsheet in the court on January 7, 2019. Out of the five accused in the case, except Mohin Uddin, the other four were acquitted. Chandpur Women and Children Torture Suppression Tribunal Special Public Prosecutor (PP) Shamchul Islam Montu said that the court took the testimony of 9 people while the case was going on for about 7 years. After taking the evidence and reviewing the case documents, the judge gave this verdict as the guilt of the accused was proved. The accused was present in the court during the verdict.

Advocate Iqbal Bin Bashar was the lawyer for the defendant and Hannan Kazi was the lawyer for the plaintiff.
