(Panmunjom = Newsis) On June 30, 2019, then-US President Donald Trump met and had a conversation with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un at the Military Demarcation Line in the Joint Security Area (JSA) of Panmunjom. 2024.11.27.
(Washington = Newsis) Correspondent Lee Yun-hee = Foreign media reported that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
According to Investing.com on the 26th (local time), Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that President-elect Trump’s team is considering a plan for President-elect Trump and Chairman Kim to communicate directly.
The news agency explained that this is a matter under review and a final decision has not yet been made at the level of President-elect Trump.
Even when he was a presidential candidate, President-elect Trump mentioned his close relationship with Chairman Kim several times, and the general consensus is that he will actually attempt to resume North Korea-US dialogue.
There is an atmosphere within the Korean government that it might be difficult for North Korea-US dialogue to proceed quickly, considering President-elect Trump’s priorities, but if reports that dialogue plans are already being discussed are true, dialogue could take place sooner than expected.
President-elect Trump held talks with Chairman Kim three times during his time in office. Although no agreement was reached, he remains the first U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader.
The president-elect himself is very proud of this experience. When accepting the Republican presidential nomination last July, he said, “I will get along well with him (Kim Jong-un) when I return (to the White House).”
President-elect Trump is expected to focus on ending the war in Ukraine after taking office, and since the North Korean military actually entered the war to help Russia, there is a possibility that dialogue will also take place with North Korea.
