The prospects of Sofia Goggio’s return to the ski carousel are not exactly optimistic.

Goggi explained that her return is still in the stars. “I can’t even walk properly,” said the 31-year-old Olympic downhill champion from Pyeongchang 2018. The worst-case scenario for the 31-year-old now is that she misses the entire next season.

“The doctors told me that after six months I should start skiing again. According to Dr. Panzeri, the pain won’t go away and I have to learn to ski with it,” she stated for Corriere della Sera.

The Italian suffered a complicated tibia and fibula fracture during training in February. Subsequently, she had to undergo an operation, during which doctors fixed her bone with a plate. Even several months after the operation, the pain in her leg remained.

Goggiová assumes that she will have problems with her tibia in the years to come. “I need to understand how I can reduce the pain when I put on a ski boot,” said the Italian. For now, he’s trying to counter it with a custom-made carbon splint.

Just like on the track, the specialist in speed disciplines does not lose her combativeness even when she returns to the slopes. Still on skis. But as the four-time winner of the downhill World Cup revealed, it was also a painful experience.

“I cried under my ski goggles.” In August, she wants to return to the training process of the Italian women’s national team. However, he realizes that this may not be a very realistic goal.

Goggio’s coach Gianluca Rulfi has already mentioned the worst possible scenario. The Italian could miss the entire next season and thus also the world championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Subsequently, she can fully focus on the Olympic Games in 2026, which will take place in her homeland – in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

According to the successful skier, this option is definitely worth considering, because as she herself admitted, it is definitely the worst injury she has ever experienced. “I had a difficult phase where I thought I would never be able to ski at a high level again,” said Goggi. However, she was able to overcome it and now she wants to prove to herself and the whole world that it is not yet time to hang up her skis.
