Will your mobile stop working in 2025? You should do that with it

Last year it was reported how a whole host of connected electronics will no longer work as they should when the old 2G and 3G mobile networks are phased out between 2025 and 2027.

– Basically, it is the case that these old networks are largely empty already. Customers have chosen other solutions, i.e. 4G and 5G. Then it is not economically justifiable to run empty networks and in terms of energy it is also completely insane, har Tommy Ljunggrenexpert on the 2G/3G technology shift at the trade and employer organization TechSverige, previously explained to News24.

Among the gadgets affected by the shift are, of course, several mobile phones of different makes and models. The common denominator is that they are older and therefore lack support for 4G or 5G.

Examples of such mobile phones are iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Doro 1372.

Therefore, the mobile phones cannot be upgraded

When News24 had previously been in contact with Tommy Ljunggren, then in relation to the shutdown’s impact on robotic lawnmowers, he stated that some of these could be upgraded. But this is not the case with mobile phones.

– When it comes to older mobile phones, they cannot be upgraded, he says News24 and continues:

– If you want to simplify it a lot, you can say that in the robotic lawnmowers there is a “mobile phone” and if it only uses 2G and 3G, you have to replace the “mobile phone”, but the rest of the robotic lawnmower does not need to be replaced. Same thing in alarms. It is only the “phone” that is replaced. It is of course not a telephone with buttons or screen and everything that is built in, but only a so-called circuit board which is what you replace. So all old mobile phones and mobile circuit boards need to be replaced.

If you have a mobile phone in your possession that will no longer work as it should when the old mobile networks are shut down, in other words, it is time to buy a new handset.

You should do that with your old mobile phone

But what do you actually do with the old mobile phone? Yes, it can be recycled if you leave it at one of the municipality’s recycling centers, for example. In some cases, electronics stores and manufacturers also accept old cell phones for recycling.

If it is a smartphone that you are going to recycle, you should copy the contents and then do a factory reset.
