Windows 10 users face a tough choice: upgrade or throw it away?

Microsoft is preparing for the end of support for Windows 10. The operating system will no longer receive updates from October 2025. That means millions of computers will become unsafe unless users switch to Windows 11. But there’s a catch: not all PCs can upgrade to the latest Windows version.

Microsoft advises on a new support page to purchase a new computer if your current PC does not meet the requirements for Windows 11. In other words, if you can’t upgrade your computer, says Microsoft that it is best to throw it away. For the recycling of your old computer, Microsoft refers you to the Open Foundation.

However, many people still have a perfectly functioning computer that is simply too old for the demands of Windows 11. From October 14, 2025, such a device will become a potential security risk, even if it still works fine for daily use.

Millions of PCs in the landfill

Microsoft warns that using an unsupported version of Windows can be dangerous. Without regular updates, computers are more vulnerable to viruses and malicious software. The company encourages users to switch to a new computer that is compatible with Windows 11.

In December last year, market analyst Canalys Research warned that millions of PCs could end up in the landfill in this way. In addition to discontinuing support, the rise of AI also plays a role. The more important AI becomes, the more people will want to upgrade.

Pay for longer updates

Microsoft offers users the new option to pay an annual amount to continue using Windows 10 safely for longer. These paid Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) do not include any new features or bug fixes, just security improvements.

You pay $61 per device for the first year. The program runs for three years and the license price increases by $61 each year. The second year costs $122 per Windows 10 device and the third year costs $183.
