After years of sitting in the shadow of Windows 10, the latest iteration of Microsoft’s Windows operating system – Windows 11 – finally seems to be making its mark, at least as far as video game lovers are concerned. It’s the first time since Windows 11 launched in 2021 that Windows 10 has outperformed Windows 10 in monthly surveys of Steam users.
Whether it was the warnings from Microsoft, who announced that they will stop official support for Windows 10 in October 2025, or whether it was the upgrade of gaming computers, new components requiring Windows 11, it is the first time when the new operating system surpasses the “old” Windows 10 in popularity.
Data comes later hardware survey conducted by Steam in August this year, Windows 11 accounted for 49% of users of the platform developed by Valve, an increase of more than 3% from the same statistics in July. Windows 10 lost these percentages, which dropped from around 50% in July to 47%, as it registered in August. By comparison, both MacOS and Linux are found on a tiny percentage, less than 2% each, of computers running Steam.
High system requirements, good reason not to upgrade to Windows 11
It also increased the use of Windows 11 in computers dedicated to surfing the Internet. Thus, if in July 2023 Windows 11 had a market share of 23% (according to data provided by StatCounter), the latest iteration of Windows increased to 32% in August of this year.
As of October last year, Windows 11 had reached more than 400 million devices, with a lower adoption rate than its predecessor. Windows 10 took just one year to reach 400 million devices, while Windows 11 took twice as long to achieve the same feat. One issue that slowed the adoption rate of Windows 11 operating system was the higher system requirements, which, despite the free upgrade, prevented many Windows 10 users from making the switch to Windows 11.
