Windows 11 continues its rise among gamers, and it’s now the most popular desktop operating system among Windows users on the Steam gaming platform. According to data from a recent survey published by Steam, Windows 11 has now surpassed the 50% market share thresholdmarking a growth of 3.36% compared to the previous month.
Windows 11’s strong summer performance comes at the expense of the nearly decade-old Windows 10, which has suffered a down 3.29% and now stands at 48.66% of the market share. Other versions of Windows, such as Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, continued to lose ground, with market shares of 0.38% and 0.07%, respectively, among gaming platform users.
Windows 11 is installed on more than 50% of gaming PCs with Microsoft OS
It is evident that Windows 11 adoption is acceleratingespecially as we approach the end of support date for Windows 10, set for October 14, 2025. Microsoft may further step up its efforts to push the upgrade to Windows 11 in the coming months, also considering the fact that some Windows 10 users will not be able to upgrade due to hardware compatibility issues.
Windows 11 continues to gain traction even among users who are not explicitly tied to the gaming world, even if in a much slower manner. The latest data from Statcounter show that Windows 11’s global market share is approaching 32%with a year-on-year growth of 8.46 percentage points. However, Windows 10 is still the (clearly) most popular desktop operating system, with a 64.14% market share, almost double that of Windows 11.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the new operating system to dethrone its predecessor, especially considering that some unsupported versions, such as Windows 7 and – even – Windows XP, are still in use on a small but not insignificant percentage of Internet-connected PCs.
