Windows 11 Passkeys in Third-Party Software

Microsoft will extend Windows 11 Passkeys support to other credential providers using the general WebAuthn API. The feature is already being tested in the Insiders channel and its implementation in the stable channel is expected in future updates.

Eliminating passwords as the primary method of digital authentication should be one of the technology industry’s top priorities. And that is where a good portion of data breaches and computer security problems come from. The Passkeys or access codes in Spanish, are one of the methods that are arriving as a replacement, since they offer a safer and more intuitive alternative.

Windows 11 Passkeys, more compatibility

Microsoft is working very well on this security feature. And we’re glad to say that when we find ourselves in another of those times of unstable and buggy updates that are reducing interest in the latest 24H2 version. Not everything is negative and Build 22635.4515 (KB5046756) released for the Windows 11 Beta channel, includes a novelty that will end up being important to extend the implementation of access keys, such as indicates the Windows Insider team: “We are releasing updates to the WebAuthn APIs to support a plug-in authentication model for access keys”.

Explained, credential providers such as 1Password, Bitwarden and other managers are joining the cause and users will be able to choose between those providers or use the native Windows function: “In the coming months, Windows customers will be able to choose a third-party provider as an additional option alongside the native Windows passkey provider, while maintaining the Windows Hello user experience.”.

Microsoft has also published the source code of the API WebAuthn (authentication credentials also known as FIDO credentials) to help developers to create your own plugins and thus support your own access key platforms.

Remember that access keys offer a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords, as they allow you to use personal identification numbers (PIN) or biometric authentication such as fingerprints or facial recognition to log in to websites and applications. With it, significantly reduce the risk of data breachessince they provide protection against phishing attacks, preventing theft and unauthorized access.

As for Windows 11 Passkeys, they have been improving their operation and potential for use, capable of working with all types of accounts and not just Microsoft IDs. AND We must be congratulated that big technology companies are betting on a future without hateful passwords. Apple, Amazon or Google are others that support them. Use them whenever they are available!
