Five days after Tiago Mayan resigned as president of the Union of Parishes of Aldoar, Foz do Douro and Nevogilde, in Porto, for forging signatures, the “Unidos pelo Liberalismo” movement lost just over a dozen of its almost 500 subscribers. The spokesperson, Rui Malheiro, believes that this means that the movement still has the strength to go to internal elections in January – despite the negative impact of the case involving what had until now been its main face –, but wants to hear first from the members.
To this end, a meeting was called for this Tuesday night with a view to assessing, firstly, whether the majority agrees that it makes sense to proceed with an alternative candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Initiative (IL), and secondly, who will be the best candidate to replace Mayan. “It is necessary to reflect and consider calmly, especially since the IL National Convention has not yet been scheduled. It is a situation that fell into our arms on Thursday, like an atomic bomb, and we need to understand whether it makes sense to move forward with the candidacy or not and, then, whether there is someone capable of leading it.and the two issues are always linked”, Rui Malheiro, spokesperson for the Unidos pelo Liberalismo movement and national advisor of IL, tells Expresso.
