In the European Union, women’s salaries are still 13 percent less than men’s, i.e. women’s wages compared to men’s for the same job are only 0.87 euros per euro, MTI reports. On the occasion of the European Day of Equal Pay, the European Commission drew attention to the gender pay gap on Thursday.
European Equal Pay Day marks the beginning of the period that women would have to work extra until the end of the year in order to earn the same amount as men in a given year for the same work. This year, that day is November 15.
Vera Jourová, for Values and Transparency, Nicolas Schmit for Social Affairs and Employment, and Helena Dalli, EU Commissioner for Equality, highlighted in a joint statement: they remain committed to a Europe where women and girls can develop and their contribution to the labor market is fully appreciated enjoy.
Although women’s employment increased by 2.9 percent and the gender pay gap decreased by 1.5 percentage points in the last five years, further steps are needed
– underlined.
Our labor markets are still gender-segregated, with more women still in lower-wage sectors, such as nursing, where part-time work is common. However, this is not a personal decision, but a consequence of inequality and social pressure, the announcement states.
The Hungarian government does not usually have ambitions to reduce gender inequality in the labor market – this is how sociologist Éva Fodor, a teacher at the gender studies department at CEU, summed up at the beginning of the year how the cabinet expects to introduce it in 2026 according to the plans planned EU directive aimed at eliminating the gender pay gap. According to the regulation, in the case of work of equal value, the wage difference between women and men cannot exceed 5 percent, compared to this, the difference in Hungary is currently 17.3 percent.
The EU would speed up the elimination of the gender pay gap from 2026, but Hungary is starting very low
