From 2025, women aged 30 to 59 must be screened for cervical cancer with a new method.
This is what the Danish Health Authority writes in a press release.
The new method means that the women only have to be examined for the form of cancer every five years instead of every three.
The samples will no longer be examined for cell changes, but for the HPV virus. According to the authority, the hpv screening catches more cases than the method used so far.
Since 2021, both methods have been used to examine the samples that were made during the period. The aim was to find out whether it was a good idea to switch to the hpv screening.
According to the Danish Health Authority, both methods are safe.
According to the authority, the Hpv screening is able to find cell changes earlier. This will likely lead to more women testing positive.
These women will then be offered a control course until it is clarified whether there are serious cell changes.
A negative HPV test means that there is a high probability that you do not have cell changes.
This is the reason why the test should not be done as often as the test for cell change, which is not as good at catching the cancer early.
