The women’s basketball team won a confident victory over the Brazilian team in the third and final round of the World Cup qualifiers in Rwanda, thus reaching the semi-finals.

The team of national team captain Péter Völgyi lost to Senegal 63-61 in a close match on Monday, and then the next day won a superior 97-60 victory over the best of the Philippines.

Before Thursday’s game day, the African team was already the group leader with two wins, the Asians could not advance with two losses, and since the Brazilians, like the Hungarians, had a fifty percent record, the formula was simple: the team that wins on Thursday will advance – meanwhile the which also collected its third victory – together with Senegal to the semi-finals.

In the third group match, the opponent was the winner of last year’s American Championship, which scored quite a few points in the first two quarters. The Hungarian defense worked well, and the long-range attempts were inaccurate on the Brazilian side.
The South Americans managed only nine points in the first period, and then they collected 14 in the second, but the fact that the Hungarians were fouled by several fouls played a role in this, as a result of which the Brazilians were able to quickly start taking penalties. The Hungarian team played their centers well, both Kiss and Határ were able to get into situations several times. Kányási made a three-pointer in the last second before the break, making the score 40-23 at the half.
The Hungarians pulled away from their rivals at the beginning of the third quarter, the difference was almost 30 points (64-37), and with that the match was practically decided. The South Americans were only able to catch up to some extent in the final quarter, but the Hungarians still won easily.
The semi-final opponent is not yet known, according to the paperwork, Rwanda, playing at home, can come, but either Argentina or Great Britain can get there. The winner of the tournament will qualify for the World Championship.
