Norway’s largest island, Spitsbergen, located in the Arctic Ocean is home to an important research unit, Polish Polar Station Hornsund named after Stanisław Siedlecki.
The facility is located on the Biały Bay Bearwithin the boundaries of the South Spitsbergen National Park, which includes the protection of a unique Arctic landscape. The few buildings of the Polish station incorporated into it make it possible to conduct research all year round. There are, among others: biological, chemical, meteorological, oceanographic and seismological laboratories. However, not only scientists are needed to work here.
For people who have often thought about… expedition to this corner of the Earththere is a real opportunity to make your dreams come true. The Institute of Geophysics (IGF) of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which manages the Polish Polar Station Hornsund, is looking for people willing to take part in expeditions.
Until November 22 this year. because it lasts recruitment for the 48th Polar Expedition of the IGF PANand they can take part in this project specialists from various fields – including IT specialists, cooks and mechanics. We are looking for volunteers to take part in two groups: wintering (year-round) and summer.
In the announcement published on the website of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, you can learn the details about the people needed for the job.
The wintering group, whose expedition covers the period from June 2025 to July 2026, includes:
- Meteorologist (3 positions), in particular with experience in the meteorological service IMWM;
- Environmental monitoring specialist / oceanographer-hydrologist with a motorboat helmsman license and experience in sailing on RIB boats and pontoons in sea conditions;
- Geophysicist-electronics engineer with experience in the fields of electronics and geophysics;
- IT specialist with experience in administering Linux and Windows systems, ICT and satellite communications;
- Mechanic with the ability to operate generators and diesel engines;
- Conservator with experience in general construction works as well as repairs and maintenance of sanitary, electrical and structural installations.
As part of the summer group, whose expedition covers a stay at the station in the period April or June 2025 – September or October 2025, the following are sought:
- Technical worker (2 positions) with skills in electricity, general construction works and plumbing. An advantage will be having all types of qualifications related to the operation of electrical installations (SEP), mechanical devices (e.g. HDS cranes, tractors, power generators, PTS conveyors) and welding qualifications;
- Administrator / Field assistant with mountain field experience, experience in tourist services and knowledge of English; knowledge of basic environmental measurements (e.g. measuring river flows, collecting samples for analyses);
- Cook and chef’s assistant with experience in public catering.
Anyone who meets the above requirements can apply to join the expedition. To become a member of the 48th Polar Expedition of the IGF PAN, you must send a notification of your readiness, indicating the selected position, to the address given in announcement e-mail address. The e-mail should contain a CV, a cover letter and a declaration of non-registration in the National Criminal Register. Applications are accepted until November 22 this year.
– Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be a scientist or have experience working in polar regions, although of course the participant of the expedition is professionally associated with the scientific community for some time. Participating in a polar expedition is undoubtedly a great adventure – Dagmara Bożek from the Scientific Communication and Promotion Department of the IGF PAN told the “Nauka w Polsce” website.
