Modern businesses are constantly striving to improve operational efficiency, using hundreds of applications and business systems.
However, these tools often hinder productivity. According to Forrester’s research, large companies use an average of 367 apps and systems, and spend an average of 2.4 hours a day just looking for the data they need. The orchestration solution presented by Workato is gaining attention as a solution to this problem.
The Paradox of Productivity and the Need for Orchestration
On June 19, at ‘TNBT(The Next Big Thing) Korea 2024’ co-hosted by IDC Korea and CIO Korea, Workato’s Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Marcus Zirn explained why the number of tools is not proportional to productivity. Zirn pointed out that “the software used by companies is disconnected from each other and there are many small silos.” In other words, to get the most out of the products purchased, multiple apps need to be integrated to eliminate silos.
Jirin emphasized the importance of orchestration, likening orchestration in IT to a symphony. Each application, data platform, and automation tool must be in harmony to create true value. Through this orchestration, Workato connects all of a company’s apps and services, integrates data flows, and supports the construction of new services.
Innovation of 3rd generation iPaaS and Workato
The first generation of iPaaS, which appeared in the early 2010s, was simply a point solution that integrated one app with another. Then, around the 2020s, the second generation of iPaaS emerged, which performed the hub function. Workato went further and provided a third generation of iPaaS, which allows you to build a series of processes by gathering various applications and data. “You can integrate various applications on a single platform like assembling Lego blocks,” explained Zirn.
Workato’s orchestration solution goes beyond simple integration and includes business logic, and is a sophisticated technology capable of handling complex data and tasks. It is similar to RPA (Robotic Process Automation), but provides the ability to handle much more data and perform complex business logic.
Integrated platform that can be easily used by non-development professionals
Workato is designed based on low-code/no-code, so even non-developer users can easily define processes and easily build apps using pre-made automation templates called ‘Recipes.’ In addition, it is equipped with RecipeIQ, an AI/ML model that suggests data mapping, logic, and next-step recommendations, enabling more efficient work.
Integration with generative AI
Workato has also integrated generative AI capabilities into its platform through a strategic partnership with OpenAI. Workato Copilots lets users build and modify recipes or write app connector code from scratch by describing what they want to do in natural language. It also supports WorkbotGPT, a feature that allows users to interact with enterprise apps and data in a conversational manner through chat apps like Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Applications in various industries
Workato is helping maximize efficiency and productivity across a wide range of industries. In the first year of implementing Workato, Atlassian saved approximately 100,000 hours across IT, finance, and HR departments. Semiconductor company Broadcom onboarded and provisioned over 10,000 employees from acquired companies in just six seconds. DoorDash automated 90% of its key financial processes, and ERP company Epicor cut new project development time by 80%.
Korean Market Entry and Investment Plans
Workato is making full-scale investments and forays into the Korean market. Markus Zirn said, “Our business in Korea is growing quite rapidly, and we are seeking collaborations with many Korean companies,” and “We plan to strengthen our investment in Korea in the future.” Workato is currently operating its business in Korea based in its Singapore office, and is considering operating personnel and establishing an office in Korea.
Korean companies have similar management styles to global companies and are adept at leveraging the value of Workato to the fullest. Workato plans to open up more possibilities in the Korean market through generative AI and orchestration.
conclusion
Workato is transforming the business processes of companies through orchestration beyond integration and automation. If we can involve more people through the right mindset, AI, and digitalization, the possibilities will increase. It will be interesting to see how Workato’s entry into the Korean market unfolds and what kind of results companies will achieve through it.
