World Music Day is celebrated with a special concert in Debrecen

István Puskás (Fidesz–KDNP), Debrecen’s Deputy Mayor for Culture, highlighted in his speech that the Kodály Philharmonic closed its 100th season in June, which is already a historic milestone, so it can be said that classical music has a historical presence in Debrecen from an institutional point of view. This heritage encourages the contemporary actors of culture to protect and build on it, he added.

For the first time on World Music Day, the students of the music school can play music together with the Kodály Philharmonic.

Speaking about the cooperation, Edit Laskay, the general director of Debrecen Music, said that it means a lot to the children, because there are very few such opportunities. He explained that about 1,350 children study music in their institution at primary and secondary level. He added that he would like them to create a tradition from this joint work, because although not all children attending their school will become musicians, it is very important to raise an audience that loves and understands music.

Dániel Somogyi-Tóth, chief music director of Debrecen, a Kodály Philharmonic In addition to the World Music Day concert, the manager highlighted the 8th of October among the 27 concerts of the new season, at which the 75-year-old Erkel- and Kossuth-prize-winning composer János Vajda will be welcomed. János Vajda himself will also be present at the concert, who dedicated his entire oeuvre to the Debrecen Reformed College. The concert will also pay tribute to Bedrich Smetana, who was born 200 years ago, and the concert will begin with his symphonic poem Moldva, said Dániel Somogyi-Tóth.

Imre Kollár, the chief conductor of the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, who also conducts the Tuesday concert celebrating World Music Day, emphasized that it features 14- and 19-year-old soloists. This means that there is a future for classical music, he noted. Zoltán Kocsis-Holper, the leading conductor of the Kodály Choir, highlighted the choir’s season that they are preparing a colorful program this year, which includes jazz, contemporary and classical works.

With their concerts, they want to provide a protective envelope that closes off a little from the digital world

– stressed the conductor, who highlighted their traditional Advent and carnival concert among the others.
