World record. The greatest lesson in computer programming

About 1,700 students aged between 12 and 67 gathered on Saturday at the Superior Technical Institute (IST) of the University of Lisbon and set a new Guinness World Record for the largest computer programming lesson ever ever organized in one place, informs Reuters.

The previous record was set by 724 participants in an event held in Dallas, a city in the United States, on October 31, 2016.

“The final total was calculated based on the number of people present and there were 1,668 participants,” said Paulina Sapinska, who works as a referee for Guinness World Records.

The organizers tried to draw more international attention to Portugal, which is seen as a growing center for information technology, and to popularize computer science in general.

IST director Rogerio Colaco said computer literacy today is like literacy 100 years ago, adding that this means “everyone needs to know something about computer science , about programming, to live in today’s world”.
