Sony is to work on yet another portable device that will run PS5 games. No need to have a console at home or internet access. This is supposed to be a response to the upcoming premiere of the successor to Nintendo Switch. Does this make sense?
Nintendo Switch is synonymous with portable console gaming, which is extremely popular. And this is 7 years after the premiere in 2017. A lot has changed during this time. She saw huge potential in portable gaming, among others. Valve, which surprised everyone with the device Steam Deck – a portable console/computer that allows you to install and run games purchased on the Steam platform. Valve was followed by other electronics manufacturers, including: with gaming and the market was flooded with various portable devices offering the ability to play PC titles.
However, there are many indications that Sony will again join this group, which in the past had its own portable consoles – PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. While the former enjoyed considerable interest, the latter had a very difficult life – mainly due to limitations imposed by PlayStation and the high prices of memory cards. A year ago, PlayStation somehow returned to the handheld market with PlayStation Portal – a device for remotely playing titles launched from PS5. Without the possibility of installation and constantly connected to the network. A few days ago, Sony released an update under which PS Portal can run games from the cloud as part of the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
However, it turns out that this is not the end of PlayStation’s adventures with portable gaming. Service Bloomberg suggests that the company is still working on a new device that will be able to run console games – mainly PlayStation 5 titles – directly from the console. This equipment would be a response to next year’s premiere of the successor to Nintendo Switch, but nothing is known about it.
Portable gaming not only from Nintendo anymore? Sony and Microsoft want their own handhelds
Will a new portable PlayStation actually be created? We will find out next year at the earliest – provided that these rumors are confirmed by the actions of Sony and PlayStation. However, it cannot be denied that Nintendo and their Switch successor will attract the most interest from players. The console, which we have been waiting for for many years, is scheduled to be presented by the end of March next year. Will the Japanese wait until the very end to make the announcement? If this happens, the new generation of portable (if portable) equipment has a chance to go on sale before the holidays. However, Nintendo does not reveal everything. All we know is that the company is testing its online services and has confirmed that Nintendo Switch games will work on the new console as part of backward compatibility. Other information is kept secret and so far we have not had any meaningful rumors and leaks indicating the direction in which designers and engineers working on the new generation of Nintendo hardware are heading.
Interestingly, a few weeks ago we wrote that Microsoft is also interested in portable gaming – and not only on mobile devices. Phil Spencer, head of the gaming department at Microsoft, gave an extensive interview to Bloomberg, in which he raised many interesting issues. He confirmed, among other things, that the giant is working on its own portable console. It’s hard to say at the moment whether such a device would have any chance of success in the face of strong competition, from Steam Deck, through ROG Ally, to Nintendo Switch 2. Considering the sales of traditional Xbox consoles, it is difficult to predict great success here. It all depends on what this type of equipment will offer and how much it costs.
