WWF Adria supports innovative ecological projects

Fifteen new projects of citizens’ associations and non-governmental organizations throughout Serbia will receive financial support from WWF Adria in the amount of up to 18,000 euros per project. The solutions that will be supported thematically will refer to protected species and habitats, protection of water and freshwater systems, as well as climate change. This is the third, last competition within the project “Actions of Serbia in the field of environment, nature and climate – Safe nature and climate”, with which WWF Adria wants to strengthen the capacities of local associations and organizations and support initiatives in their environments that will improve the quality of life.

Protected species and habitats

“Ekolespark” is the manager of the protected area “Ade and sections near Slankamen”, where it implements a project to protect various species whose presence is declining. The project envisages the revitalization of pastures and the creation of conditions for the recovery of endangered species. Work will be done on the removal of invasive species, cleaning the canals of silt and maintaining the water regime, grazing control, and the installation of protective fences.

IN FOCUS:

Protection of water and freshwater ecosystems

Protection of freshwater ecosystems in the Velika Morava valley – Join, the project is aimed at building knowledge about freshwater ecosystems in Pomoravlje and assessing existing harmful impacts. It is planned to research, identify and map the state of freshwater ecosystems (river, pond and swamp) with an assessment of biological diversity and an indication of the distribution of certain wild species, as well as an analysis of existing water management policies, waste water and gravel exploitation in selected ecosystems.

Blue oases of southeast Serbia – UG Vizija – the project will identify endangered species and assess their condition in the localities: Krupačko blato, Smilovska jezera and Dag banjica. After the identification and analysis of pressures on biological diversity in these localities, at least one mitigation measure will be developed for each of the localities, as well as recommendations for a plan for their management.

Freshwater protected areas as a new model for preserving freshwater ecosystems in Serbia – Ekomar – the idea is focused on increasing knowledge about the possible application of the FPA (Freshwater protected area) concept in Serbia for the purpose of protecting freshwater species and ecosystems. First, an assessment of the state of the existing “special fish habitats” in Serbia will be made, followed by a systemic analysis of the existing legislative solutions that touch on the FPA concept and an analysis of shortcomings. At the very end, recommendations for new legislative solutions and the introduction of the category of freshwater protected areas will be developed.

SRP Kraljevac – an example of good practice in reducing negative effects on freshwater ecosystems in Vojvodina – Institute for Regional Development – in order to give a good example of the preservation of freshwater systems in the area of the Kraljevac Special Nature Reserve, freshwater pond ecosystems will be mapped, including special ecosystems and species. Also, work will be done on the analysis of the presence of microplastics in marsh ecosystems in order to prove the influence of man, and finally scientifically based recommendations for the protection of marsh ecosystems will be given.
